About Benalmádena

The area of Benalmádena is one of the most famous holiday resorts in the Costa Del Sol .
Over the last 40 years Benalmádena has grown and flourished and it remains an extremely popular destination for British and Northern European tourists. During the summer months the resident population swells from 30,000 to 100,000 as the season kicks in and the hotels and holiday apartments fill up to capacity.
It is a lively resort and can offer many different styles of holidays, whether it’s 5 star luxuries, or casino that your looking for or going to the best restaurants every night, then you can have it! On the other hand, if you would prefer a cheap and cheerful bucket and spade package holiday you can have that too - Benalmádena has it all!
Aside from the sheer variety of entertainment on offer, one of the many reasons for Benalmádena´s popularity is that is very easy to reach as it is just 17km away from the international airport at Málaga.
The municipal area of Benalmádena is split into three main sections; the pueblo, Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmádena Costa and they are all very different places with distinct character.
Benalmádena Costa, which is the main tourist area is predominantly a strip of bars, restaurants and hotels, which all cater for the family holiday market. It is a purpose built resort that runs parallel with the seafront and incorporates the wonderful marina area, and if you are looking for one of the fantastic beaches then they’re all in the Costa area too!
One of the things that Benalmádena is most famous for is its award-winning marina. The marina is tastefully designed in an Arabic style and it is currently home to over 1000 boats and has some fantastic front line marina property you can buy. This marina won the award for best marina in the world in 1995 with many people claiming it is the best full stop! It is modern and lively and great to go to either during the day or night. In addition to the boats, there is a shopping centre, dozens and dozens of restaurants and plenty of bars and nightclubs which all have a very tropical holiday feel about them. There is also a diving school, sailing school, mini golf, Sea Life centre, daily boat trips and much more.
You will find the Sea Life centre at the end of the marina. It is the same company that you may find in many northern European cities but each Sea Life centre is different to reflect the marine life that is found in that particular place. So even if you have visited ones in the UK or northern Europe before, this one will give you a good insight into what life is like in the ocean off the coast of Spain and it is well worth a visit. Sharks, sting rays, piranhas and a seahorse exhibition are all at the Benalmádena Sea Life centre.
Those looking to experience some great nightlife should head to the coastal part of Benalmádena. The nightlife is vast and varied with something for every taste and budget. The famous 24 Hour Square is the centre of the action and it lives up to its name as – surprise, surprise it is open around the clock, all year long! The bars and clubs here are loud and mainly cater for the younger 18 – 30 type group. A lot of young Spanish people also socialise here at the weekends.
Back down on the marina and the nightlife is just as lively but it is a little more upmarket too. Most places do not charge an entrance fee and drink prices are fairly standard from bar to bar. Quite a lot of the bars on Benalmádena marina have a salsa theme and with a Cuban cocktail in your hand and the Latino sounds playing, you will really begin to feel the Spanish vibe!
Along one part of the seafront promenade there are many little bars owned by British and Irish people and most of them have a British theme; Peacock Tavern, Wyn´s Bar and the Irish Times are just a few names to give you an idea.
Lying just above the strip of coastline is Benalmádena pueblo. This is a lovely old typical Andalucían village with cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. The village lies around 280 metres above sea level and many properties have magnificent views over the rest of the town and the surrounding areas – although some of the steep streets can be a little wearing on the legs if you are not careful. The pueblo itself has remained seemingly untouched and is something of an oasis of calm in amongst the tourist storm!
On the road into the Benalmádena pueblo you will come across the amazing Butterfly Park which is definitely worth a visit and the biggest Buddhist temple in Western Europe! The Stupa temple is open to visitors and has the most amazing energy around it, there is a viewing platform at the side of it where you can look out across a wide swathe of the coast and beyond to Morocco and Gibraltar.
In the pueblo, the eating out experience is more refined and well worth a visit. Instead of the fish and chips scenario which can be seen and found on the Costa, the restaurants here are more traditionally Spanish in style. There are tapas bars, authentic Spanish eateries and bodegas and also a few internationally-themed establishments all serving great quality food within the square and old town and giving you a fantastic real feel of Southern Spain.
The third section of the Benalmádena area is Arroyo de la Miel, which literally translates as ´Brook of honey´ Arroyo is largely a commercial area and acts as something of a dividing area between the pueblo and the coastal strip. The area used to be a separate village and it is served by its own railway station and amenities. You can catch trains from Arroyo de la Miel to Fuengirola in the west and Málaga in the east making it an excellent place to buy property.
A couple of minutes walk from the train station is the ice skating rink and Tivoli World. Benalmádena is probably most famous for this large theme park. There are over 20 rides and attractions all set in tropical gardens with luminous fountains and pretty little squares to sit and enjoy! There are also restaurants and flamenco shows in the evenings. Tivoli World in Benalmádena is open all year round but opening times vary.
Benalmádena is one of the holiday capitals of the Costa Del Sol but many people have loved it so much that they have decided to buy a home here. With so much to do and so many facilities, it is a popular place to buy property and is a fantastic location to live all year round.
