Driving in Spain

Driving in Spain on the right hand side of the road is very easy and the whole road system has approximately 166,000KM in length throughout the whole of Spain.

Information about all the laws and Highway Code for Spain can be found on the Spanish Traffic Department website. (Direccion General de Tréfico, DGT) https://www.dgt.es/es

Note: the Spanish legal limit for drink driving (DUI/DWI) is 0.5g/I of Alcohol in the blood, or 0.3g/I of Alcohol in the blood if the driver has held a licence for less than two years.

If you have an accident then call Police Guardia Civil 112 or Policia Local 092 from your mobile or land line and calls are free, or you can use a SOS telephones located on the motorways and main roads.

Lead petrol is called Super97, and the unleaded is called SIN Palomo 98 or Eurosuper 95. Diesel is called Gasoleo.

If you are driving inland then it would be wise to make sure you don't run low on fuel as you can drive miles and miles without seeing a garage.

Radar speed traps are very common in southern Spain and the Costa Del Sol have several scattered along the Coast from east to west. You will see a radar sign telling you to be vigilant and to watch your speed and some even take you average speed like the one situated just before El Faro lighthouse heading out of Fuengirola and on to just past the garage of La Cala de Mijas which takes your average speed of 80km over a 10km stretch of road.

Renting a car

In the Costa Del Sol is probably the cheapest place to rent a car in the whole of Europe and there are some very reasonable priced car hire companies all competing for your business compared to the rest of Europe. www.doyouspain.com is the best and cheapest portal to use when looking for car hire.

Please be aware that the small price you pay online isn't the end of it.

When booking your Car hire you are usually covered by a third party insurance buy you are not fully covered so usually when you arrive at the car hire companies office at the airport you will be asked to either pay a large deposit by credit card only or pay and extra car insurance to be fully covered.
There is also service charge for refilling the fuel tank up.
