Situated between lively Fuengirola and fashionable Marbella, the area known as Calahonda is the largest property development area in the whole of Mijas Costa. In fact it has grown so much over the past two decades that it could actually qualify as a separate town...if the Municipality of Mijas would allow it!
The extremely popular resort and community of Sitio de Calahonda takes up an area of around 600,000 square metres and most of that space is covered by villas, townhouses, penthouses and apartments. There are also plenty of green spaces and some fantastic sport and leisure facilities as well as a large commercial area. The wider landscape of Calahonda is a very scenic and mountainous area which is covered in pine trees and olive groves. As many of the properties on the developments have been built on the road that lead up to the hills, most of them offer really amazing views of the coast. All this combined with the fact that the majority of the urbanisation has been designed in a typical Andalucían style means Calahonda is a great place to buy property and is a very charming and peaceful place, where you can experience an enjoyable and relaxed lifestyle.
As you would expect from such a large and popular area, Calahonda has every amenity imaginable. To begin with there are 45 bars, restaurants and cafes spread across a number of commercial centres. On one side of the development you have the El Zoco centre where you will find supermarkets, cafes, bars, souvenir shops, newsagents and lots of places to eat. On the other side you will find the Las Cypresses centre with two supermarkets, video shops, various banks and yet more restaurants. There are also a variety of shops, supermarkets and other amenities running along the front of Calahonda at the side of the main coast road.
In between the two commercial centres, at the heart of Calahonda is the main commercial road which is known to the locals as “The Strip.” Seven banks, several supermarkets, card shops, furniture shops, estate agents, travel agents, car repair, internet cafes, newsagents, chemist, medical centres and much more – you’ll find everything you need in abundance in Calahonda.
Calahonda has a nursery school and there are private and state primary and secondary schools which are all nearby. One of the best known international schools on the coast is also based in Calahonda. This offers a very high standard of education for children based on the British National Curriculum.
Communications and the transport network are very good in this area. At the bottom of Calahonda runs the A7 coast road, which connects to every area and town along the coast. Buses run regularly up and down the coast road from Fuengirola to Marbella all year round and both can be reached in around 25 minutes by bus. There are also plans in place to extend the Málaga to Fuengirola train line as far as San Pedro de Alcántara and Estepona. Calahonda has already been named as one of the areas that will have its own train station on this line.
At the top of Calahonda you will find the AP7 toll motorway. Although you have to pay to drive on each stretch of this motorway, it is considerably quieter and faster than the main A7 coast road, which gets extremely busy during the summer months. Malaga airport is only a 30 minute drive away from the Calahonda toll exit and Puerto Banus takes about 20 minutes to reach by car.
As the development of Calahonda is such a big area, with many properties on the hills, it has its own tourist train service. This is a motor train that travels around on the road rather than on tracks. It goes up and down the main roads for you to hop on and off when you want and will save your legs in those hot summer months. The train runs once every hour and costs about 2euro from the top of the development to the bottom. It will stop wherever you want, so if you see it go past just wave it down and pay the driver. The tourist train is open air though so take an overcoat if you are travelling on it in the winter months when it can be a little breezy here in southern Andalucía.
There is no shortage of sports facilities for the residents of Calahonda. There are 10 golf courses all within a 10km radius of Calahonda. Tennis fans will love the fantastic Club Del Sol, which is a large tennis club and gym. There are numerous clay courts at Club Del Sol and the main courts even have seating areas for competition matches. There are lessons given here for all ages and levels or courts can be hired on an hourly basis. The club also has a fantastic terrace where you can relax with a drink after a strenuous game!
Alternatively, if tennis and golf aren’t your favourite sports then all the housing developments in Calahonda have their own swimming pools where you can cool off and swim a few not-too-strenuous lengths!
One of the main reasons that people love to buy property and visit Calahonda is the beach and the fantastic weather! The long beach at Calahonda has fine grain sand and there are plenty of water sports activities to try your hand at.
You can get something to eat down on the beach all year round in one of the beach bars. Fish and seafood are the specialties, but they do offer other things for all international tastes if fish isn’t your thing. There are also sun loungers and parasols to hire as well as pedalos and jet skis.
Approximately five minutes drive away from Calahonda is the quaint little port of Cabopino. This is a lovely place to enjoy an evening stroll as the sun goes down. The port is home to many lovely yachts and boats and provides the perfect backdrop to an unforgettable evening out or a romantic meal in one of the ports many restaurants.
Calahonda was founded in 1963 and since then the area has been growing and developing all the time. The development has an amazing array of facilities and amenities to offer and it has become one of the best and most popular residential areas along the whole coast. Back in 2001, Calahonda won the award for “Best Spanish Development.”
The area of Calahonda has also become extremely popular with expatriates of all nationalities and is particularly popular with the British, German, Dutch and people from the Scandinavian countries. As it is so well located at the middle of the coast, it is an excellent base from which to discover the Costa Del Sol , Gibraltar and even North Africa!
