About Marbella

Formerly a small Andalucían fishing town on the Costa Del Sol and now a world famous residential area and holiday destination, Marbella is one of the most exciting resorts in the world.
For the past four or five decades the rich and famous, bronzed and beautiful have all descended on Marbella to enjoy the miles of golden sandy beaches, the chic restaurants and the stylish shops. Many wealthy Europeans and Arabs love to come to Marbella and stay in their expensive holiday homes or in one of the many 5 star hotels or exclusive country clubs in the area.
Despite its star-studded image, Marbella is not just a destination for the elite and the wealthy. It offers something for everyone with every budget, taste and style catered for. Marbella has style and beauty in abundance and you will not have to look too hard to find it.
The town itself is roughly split into the two general areas of the old town or the Casco Antiguo and the seafront with all its attractions. The two sides are easily defined by the main road that slices through the middle of the town on its way to the resorts and villages on either side.
Spending hours wandering around the old town area is an absolute pleasure and you will be utterly inspired by the beautiful architecture and delightful shaded streets. The old town is made up of a maze of cobbled alleyways, picturesque squares and quaint churches which all radiate off the main central plaza, which is called the Plaza de los Naranjos – or Orange Square. Head to the square on a summer evening and you will be amazed by the beautiful light that floods the area as the hot sun subsides for the day. You will also be spoilt for choice with cafes and places to eat in the old town and you can pick up some wonderful shoes, accessories, clothes and souvenirs from the many small shops that line the narrow streets.
The main Plaza de los Naranjos is geographically the centre of Marbella but it also has a real “buzz” about it as people seem to congregate there both night and day. As the name suggests there are orange trees everywhere, a pretty little church at one end of the square. Here you will find many quaint restaurants, mostly serving Spanish cuisine, which line the perimeters and the centre of the square. The fountain in the plaza dates back to the Renaissance period in the 15th Century. You will also find the town hall in the main square, which is an impressive building that dates back to the 16th Century. In fact, wherever you look around the old town you will see important historical buildings which are a pleasure to look around and admire.
There are also some beautiful, traditional houses dotted around the perimeters of Orange Square. Many are painted in the traditional white and the residents take great care in their upkeep. In fact the look of their homes is a matter of pride and many of them have beautiful cascades of brightly coloured flowers in terracotta pots and window boxes.
There are many winding narrow streets in Marbella old town which can be explored and which make a lovely setting for a romantic evening stroll. A lot of the architecture in Marbella, especially in the old town is of Moorish design and this adds to the dreamy ambience.
Just outside the old town area, before you reach the sea, you will find yourself on the main road, which is also a centre for shopping and services. You will find many exclusive and designer shops here and you will not have a problem finding a pair of flashy sunglasses or a designer bag. However, if expensive price tags are not your thing, you can travel a little out of the centre to the big commercial centre La Canada. Here you will find shops of all types and for all budgets and there is a large supermarket, a cinema, 10 pin bowling alley and a few eateries as well.
Back to Marbella centre and you cannot pay a visit to this area without taking in the fabulous promenade and seafront area. The beaches are what have made the entire coastal area so popular, and the miles and miles of wonderful sands at Marbella are a perfect example of what is on offer.
Once you have had enough of sightseeing in the old town and shopping, make your way down to the main road that runs through the centre of Marbella. On the other side of the road is the route to the sea and the sand and you can access the beach side from almost any point.
Lining the promenade are a stunning variety of tapas bars, cafes and restaurants on one side, and traditional fish restaurants – or chiringuitos (beach bars)- on the other.
Some of the beach restaurants serve the Andalucían speciality of sardines barbecued on a spit. They are hard to ignore when the wonderful woody smell of food cooking drifts up and tantalizes your taste buds - whether you are hungry or not! A day on Marbella sea front is definitely a lovely way to pass the time! If you have come to the coast for the sun then Marbella is also a wonderful place to top up your tan.
Marbella also has its own marina where you can take a peek at the wonderful boats, take a boat trip to one of the surrounding resorts, or try your hand at a selection of water sports. If you are travelling with children then Marbella also has numerous children’s play grounds, bouncy castles and fun places to keep them amused.
Colourful, cosmopolitan, fun and sophisticated, Marbella is a real treat for the discerning holiday maker and a must for the residents looking for a superior standard of living!
