SPORT SPAIN

Costa Del Sol in Southern Spain is also known as the Costa del Golf and a golfers dream with many International competition standard courses as common as grass on a lawn. Players come from far and wide to play well-groomed fairways and put onto greens that look like they’d melt in the mouth. Whatever your standard you’ll find holes to challenge you here and professionals are always on hand to help improve your game.

Not all visitors come to spend their days on a golf course and not all golfers only play golf. Whatever your sport, it’s likely you can play it in the Costa Del Sol .

Tennis and paddle is popular and clubs open their arms to new members. You can hire courts privately or join in with club sessions. Coaches are usually available to assist and most clubs run courses for children.

Football is as popular in Spain as in much of Europe and indeed the world. If you prefer to play rather than watch, many pubs or companies have 5-a-side teams that meet regularly.

Horse racing over the years has been popular at Mijas racecourse and horse riding is a wonderful way to enjoy Andalucía’s mountains and beaches. Look in your phone directory for local stables and riding schools.

Polo is famously the sport to enjoy in Sotogrande. If you wish to rub shoulders with the aristocracy go and enjoy a match.

Recreational sports grounds are never far away and provide facilities for most team sports and courts for paddle tennis.

Many hotels have gym facilities that can be used by paying a monthly membership fee. Golf clubs may also have a gym although membership might be expensive. Alternatively most towns have independent gyms. Some offer a variety of keep fit classes and indoor sports and exercise techniques such as kick boxing and yoga. Ask if your sport is catered for before choosing which club to join.

Blood sports are traditionally part of Spanish culture.
